Beer Can Chicken — Part One: How to Light a Grill

The little charcoal grill in our backyard has been taunting me for months! Somehow it knows I dream of summer.  Now that it’s mid-June and the clouds are beginning to let up, I can finally show that smug bastard a thing or two. First I have to learn how to operate it…

My roommate happens to own a fire starter device, which makes the process way easier.  Start with newspaper (crumpled up *loosely*)…

…and then apply about half-a-bag’s worth of charcoal briquettes:

After the firestarter works its magic, allowing the coals to get red hot, dump out the coals…

…keeping an eye out for any towering bursts of flame!  Now use a poke-y tool to distribute the coals as evenly as possible, and allow to smolder for a while.

Now we’re talking. Or, in this case, we’re grilling.

Come back next week for Part Two of Beer Can Chicken, in which we actually have a chicken! And a beer can.
